What I want to do
For the Self Negotiated Unit I want to investigate further in the type of experience that I have been working on in the last pieces. Stretching the same confrontational attitude that I feel I have achieved by showing a clip of myself holding sentences written on sheets of A4 paper, in order to establish a conversation between the viewer and the piece, in which I am arguing the meaning of the piece itself as well as all the other pieces in the exhibition and therefore challenging the meaning of art.
I see producing this work as a significant departure within my personal creative and especially conceptual practice.
My intention is to keep the non-beautiful aesthetic of the piece in order to create a situation that is more intellectually challenging rather than visually.
Working on poor quality videos to embrace a minimalist aesthetic, which will help me and the viewer to concentrate on reading the content, rather than to look at the formal attributes and therefore to allow the viewer to focus on the meaning of the piece rather than the look of it, preserving the concept of the work being constructed by anyone.
Maintaining that same kind of conversation as in my previous work between the video and the observer where the object in the exhibition and the language occupy a critical role in the visual imagery, the intention is to set the parameters and the conditions for the viewer to engage with the work and therefore for something to happen and then observe and possibly record what is happening, making that into the piece.
In one version of my latest work, I have used notes on paper in Italian, my native language, as a tool to describe a social situation as well as a series of personal feelings and I filmed myself holding the notes. Although I felt that it was becoming more a self portrait and a social analysis and was therefore diverting from the original intent of that specific project, I have found it very challenging. Having myself in the video was emotionally very difficult but at the same time very interesting as it gave me the opportunity to become part of a public discussion and very recognisable.
By keeping that same confrontational feeling that was in my previous work, I want to take further that emotional challenge, making this a more personal piece of work as well as a self analysis. I want to use some sound to support the video, part because one of the feedback from my previous work was that it was missing of some sound, but most of all because I fell using sound will add an extra dimension to the project giving to the viewer a further tool for reflection within the piece.
At this stage, the intention is to experiment with new and different sentences or words, use these same words or sentences portrayed in the video and reading them in a different order from what they are appearing on the monitor or in a different language, then record my voice while reading and play it back together with the video, to force upon the viewer that distraction that I previously tried to avoid in the piece.
